Hostlag’s Guide to Registering a .edu.ng Domain Name

Who is eligible?

The .edu.ng extension is a closed domain category and is restricted to tertiary-level academic institutions in Nigeria that are approved and accredited by the relevant bodies such as the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE) or other constitution-recognised accreditation authorities. Registrations must be at the third level (for example: yourinstitution.edu.ng) and sub-domains (e.g., department.yourinstitution.edu.ng) may be created under that once registered. NiRA (.ng) Website+1

Key Requirements & Documentation

To register a .edu.ng domain, you’ll need to prepare the following:

  • A scanned copy of the institution’s accreditation certificate or registration proof from the relevant authority (NUC, NBTE, NCCE, etc.). NiRA (.ng) Website+1

  • A scanned authorisation letter on the institution’s official letterhead, signed by the Head of the institution (or next officer in the hierarchy). The letter must clearly state:

    • The staff member authorised to act for domain registration (full name, email, phone number, designation).

    • The desired domain name (e.g., yourinstitution.edu.ng). NiRA (.ng) Website+1

    • Administrative contact details (name, designation, email, phone) and technical contact details (name, designation, email, phone).

  • At least two (2) name-servers defined and ready for assignment at point of registration.

Why choose .edu.ng

  • Establishes academic credibility: The use of “.edu.ng” signals recognition as an accredited tertiary institution in Nigeria.

  • Builds a distinct professional identity aligned with the national tertiary-education sector.

  • Because it is a restricted domain, you benefit from a cleaner namespace with fewer irrelevant or non-academic registrations.

How the process works

  1. Select your desired third-level domain (e.g., yourinstitution.edu.ng) and ensure it aligns with your institution’s approved name.

  2. Prepare the required documents (accreditation certificate, authorisation letter, admin and technical contact details, name servers).

  3. Submit the documentation via an accredited registrar (under NiRA) or directly as directed by the registrar. NiRA will verify your eligibility and approve the registration under section 9 of the NiRA Domain Name Policy. NiRA (.ng) Website+1

  4. Once NiRA approves the registration, the domain is activated and ready for your institution’s use.

  5. After activation, you may create sub-domains (e.g., department.yourinstitution.edu.ng) for academic units under the main domain. NiRA (.ng) Website

Key Tips to Avoid Delays

  • Ensure the authorisation letter: is on official letterhead, signed by the authorised officer, and addressed appropriately.

  • Verify all contact details (names, designations, phone numbers, email addresses) for both admin and technical contacts before submission.

  • Confirm that the name servers you submit are already configured, operational, and spelled correctly.

  • Choose a domain name that corresponds clearly to your institution’s official name to meet eligibility requirements.
